A reply to Government Health IT on Meaningful Use

A response to a post in Government Health IT. http://www.govhealthit.com/newsitem.aspx?nid=72187#

Although I can’t prove it, I’ll bet by 2012 the meaningful use standards will have gone the way of the first reform bill. Hospitals should not be making buying decisions that involve hitting standards that have no meaningful use.

However, if hospitals fail to be able to deliver on what the system can do and how well they roll it out within their organization, they have no one to blame but themselves. This is why I place such a premium on planning and establishing detailed functional requirements. Involve the users, excel at change management, and plan like the success of your organization depended on it.

  1. Excellent point well made Paul. I hear this quite frequently from Private Practice Physicians when speaking with them about their pursuit of getting an EMR for their Clinics. And one great example and Surgeon Client of mine used in regards to really relying on the Stimulus Incentives as they are tied to Meaningful-use is it is most probably going to be like the other mandated frenzy that was being caused by the big look out here it comes, don’t get caught without it or you won’t have any “Television” to watch without the coming by “the deadline” of HDTV! And waalaah, all the hype ad standard T.V. demons never really came and most average americans are still watching television on the same set they have had for years….. So as you have said, meaningful-use , at least as we now “fearingly” are being made to know it, will probably dissapear into the big Stimulus Incentives Dust Bowl somewhere in Legislature Land or SenateVille. So don’t hold your breath is what i tell my Docs and if you are wanting to go EMR then do it based on Features, and functionality, and your work-flow so to add value to patient care and to the business bottom-line of your Practice. Invest in it as a tool and make it work for you and if all is well, maybe Uncle Sam might just send you a Holiday Bonus sometime in the next 3 to 5 years, but don’t hold your breath.
